Superintendent's Message - October 2019 - Discussing Transition to a new method of electing the Board
Posted 9/30/19

Civic engagement is a vital component of any successful school district or community. Today, I’d like to invite you to engage in an important process led by the Fremont Unified School District Governing Board.

On September 11th, the District started the process of transitioning the method of how our Governing Board members are elected.  Under the current “at-large” system, all registered voters within the District’s boundaries can vote for candidates for all Board member seats.  Under the new proposed system, candidates will be elected by “trustee areas.”  This means only voters within a given trustee area can vote for candidates residing in that same area.  The intent of this proposed system is to offer greater opportunities for Board candidates that might not otherwise consider running under an at-large system.

Transitioning to this new system requires a number of public hearings on proposed trustee area boundaries prior to asking Alameda County to approve the change.  If approved, trustee area voting would be held starting with the general election, on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020.

Before the District prepares and presents boundary options, Fremont Unified will hold two public hearings on September 25th and October 16th for the community to comment and give feedback regarding potential trustee areas.  Once drawn, the District will then host additional public hearings October 30th, November 20th and December 10th regarding the map options. Times and locations of these upcoming public hearings are listed here, as well as on the District website.  If you cannot attend a hearing or meeting and wish to comment, please do not hesitate to call or email us with your feedback.  Following the initial public hearings, the proposed maps will be created and posted on the District’s web site.

Thank you for your support and participation in this important process.
